What I was trying to do
I had seen these guys cycle past this corner a full year before I was able to capture the photo. I loved the movement and the light at this time of the morning. To capture it, I tried several times to wait 2km away where I thought they might pass, then drove quickly to this corner and set up, waiting. I tried several times over the 12 months before I caught this.
What worked
Just to be able to capture the moment at the very place I had first observed the opportunity was immense. The light worked, the rain from the wheels, their faces towards me, a nice spread through the pack.
What I'd do differently
It’s missing something of the magic of the very first time that I saw them. Maybe a slightly different angle? I first saw them from the car as I was turning left, so this picture doesn’t capture exactly what I observed. But the spot where I stood was the only safe place on this corner to stand. I haven’t tried again since I took this. One thing it is missing is motion – a slower shutter speed to capture a little movement would have been ideal.
