I remember falling in love with the square composition. Strictly speaking, it happened before I started shooting in square myself. At the time I was mostly shooting film, and I had brought some rolls to the lab for development that day. Pavel Kosenko, one of the lab founders, just came back from a trip to the far north, where he’d been trying his newly acquired (but old) Hasselblad, or “hassle-bla-bla-d”, as he calls it 🙂 As it happened, his film had just been scanned, and we looked at the results together on his laptop. After 35mm film, medium format looked absolutely stunning: sharp and with beautiful tonal transitions and all that. But what impressed me the most was a completely different way of seeing the scene. When your viewfinder itself is limited to a square, you start building the balance of the frame differently and it removes the choice between portrait and landscape orientation; adds one more creative constraint, which has always helped me forget about the camera and dissolve completely into the process. Later I bought a Hasselblad myself and, for several years, had a great time shooting with that clumsy camera. I eventually had to sell it, but the habit of shooting in square, as you can see, stayed with me.

Early October in San Francisco Bay is synonymous with Fleet Week. Fleet Week is a parade of Navy and Coastguard ships, and various aircraft demonstrations capped off by the US Navy’s Blue Angels. This is a multi day event that draws a million visitors to the shoreline of the San Francisco Bay. Thousands of people flooded the Presidio area alone. These are images of the crowds and the Blue Angels. The stylized image of the four Blue Angels passing the south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge is an homage to the artist Michael Schwab, who designed the imagery for the Presidio Park Trust and the Golden Gate National Park.

Tying Everything Together For A Strawberry Smile. This is an image I took in our local town of Maidstone a couple of years ago which I'd almost forgotten about. The smiling strawberry in the foreground was part of a Shaun The Sheep sculpture trail which was added to by the stripes of a nearby shop window display in the background but as an image it still seemed to be missing that extra something until everything suddenly felt like it came together when the lady in the patterned top appeared and then started tying her headscarf.

A Win 'N' Sipn Bonus With Dogs. Taken in my local town centre. Maybe the owner was trying to get a win 'n' spin bonus but their dogs were pining and looking for them while letting out small yelps and whines.
