Bottle alley, Hastings. My wife spotted the feet and I stopped, moved myself into position and took one shot before the feet disappeared. I like it because it looks like something slightly surreal that Edward Hopper might have painted (and then thrown away).

I think this might be my first ever “street” photograph. The street in question is Bouverie Street - part of the area in London known as Fleet Street where most of the UK’s newspapers were based - and it was taken in the spring of ‘86 during the printers strike. Rupert Murdoch had moved production of his titles to a non-union plant in Wapping. This was taken on a march to the plant. I was a journalist at the time and a member of the NUJ. One from Florence. It’s was about noon on a seriously bright day. I walked around the corner as the nuns were pouring out of the dark of the church into the light bouncing off a big glass building opposite. No time to plan or think about this one. Just moved a bit to the right, panned left and made a couple of frames. One of my favourites from that trip.
