It was Christmas season. In Portland, Maine, where I was living at the time, the Polar Express was running from the edge of town to the tip of the peninsula and back. It was very cold. I was afraid my film might freeze so I kept my camera under my parka as long as I could. The train pulled out. I had pre-focused and was handholding a very slow shutter speed. The little boy spotted me--and that was the shot.
