Behind the frame
What I was trying to do:
I was walking through a quiet temple on a busy street in Saigon's Cholon district when I found this man reading in the doorway. He sat on the threshold between the stillness of the temple and the noise of the street, and he seemed to belong to both. I wanted the photograph to show that boundary between the temple's peace and street's chaos.
What worked:
The light through the doorway did most of the work. Sun filled the courtyard while the interior fell to near black, so the doorway framed the man reading there without any help from me. The light on the tile provided a bit of bounce to fill in some detail on the silhouette. I also had the Ricoh GR IIIx in my hand. My Z8 and longer lenses were in my bag, and the moment would have been gone before I could switch cameras. The small, quiet camera let me take the frame without disturbing him.
What I'd do differently:
The street looks calmer in the frame than it was. Through the gate you see an umbrella and a shopfront, but not the motorbikes and traffic that surrounded the temple. I would have waited for a bus or a wave of scooters to pass behind the gate so the picture shows the chaos it depends on. Lingering too long could have disturbed the man reading in the doorway.
