Intent
Behind the frame
- What I was trying to do:
- Snap the cat for my little girl as she wasn't there to see it. Proof, in other words!
- What worked:
- I hoped it would appear to defy gravity! The composition is really a fun play on juxtaposition—the fluid, organic shape of the cat (whiskers and all) frozen against the rigid, geometric lines of the architecture. The harsh shadows cast by the courtyard walls frame a perfect, graphic 'landing zone' on the tiles, while the cat's shadow anchors it further. In terms of colour—or lack thereof—I often turn to B&W to emphasize these kinds of high-contrast situations. The palette of Greek materials lent itself perfectly to that raw texture, and with the monochrome subject, I hoped it would pop! Oh, and I've a thing for 4:3 crops at the moment—plenty of height and enough width without going entirely square, though perhaps it's not very 'Insta-friendly' (I'm not on Instagram). P.S. It jumped up and over the wall a split second after this. Perhaps the hint of foliage in the shadows suggests what is waiting on the other side... an afterthought, admittedly.
- What I'd do differently:
- I'm not sure - it all happened rather quickly! I suspect this won't be as 'street' as most. I often take pics of animals - perhaps thats the coward in me!
