What I was trying to do:
I was travelling in Tokyo and it began to rain quite heavily as I was setting out one morning. Seeing this as an opportunity to capture the chaos of the city with an added dynamic of people frantically trying to escape the rain, I began to photograph. When seeing photos of people walking with umbrellas it's become hard not to see it as being derivative of Saul Leiter so wanted to capture something that had at least a little of my own spin to it. As I was stood under a shelter, someone stood in front of me with a clear umbrella. I thought it would be interesting to shoot through this so the raindrops on the umbrella itself would add extra texture or detail to the image. The white overexposed patch to the side of the image is a big drop of water that began to trickle down the umbrella and subsequently catch the light. It aligned perfectly with the approaching woman and obscured her face adding an element of mystery to the photograph.
