Behind the frame
What I was trying to do:
I shot this image in the Souks of Amman, Jordan. It was incredibly busy and I was struggling to isolate subjects for an interesting street photo. I was using the Acros black and white film simulation in camera because there was a huge wash of colour, so it was shapes, pockets of light and shadows that were standing out to me. I was drawn to this scene and intentionally cut out the second person, but allowed them to be shown in the shadow.
What worked:
This is one of a few of my images where I feel like it stands on its own to tell a story - usually I'm creating short sets or pairings to convey a feeling. When I revisit this shot, the story I perceive is of loss - the person to the right is still here but the shadow represents a lost friend or relative. This totally is not what I was intending in the moment by the way - the speed at which you move through these markets and nature of street photography makes it very difficult to plan or set up a shot with real intention. It's a good example of how a snap moment of instinct in street photography can turn into something meaningful later down the line.
What I'd do differently:
The busyness of the scene is part of the natural environment in the Souks, though I would have preferred a cleaner, less busy composition to draw more attention to the silhouette and shadow - the main focal point. I perhaps could have metered for the highlights to bring down the shadow areas to achieve this, or could have played with some masks in Lightroom.
