I’m a reactive street photographer, walking through busy streets looking for strong characters and fleeting moments. I try to work with natural light, often using side light or positioning myself so the light falls onto subjects as I walk towards them, rather than using flash. I also like to keep some shadow in the frame to add depth and atmosphere.
This was a split-second capture. I was drawn to his strong character and serious expression, contrasted with the fun tourist hat. I liked that unexpected combination and the feeling of catching a completely unposed moment in the middle of a busy street.
What worked:
I captured his eyes and expression, he is in focus which is always a bonus with manual lens.
What I'd do differently:
The subject is in the shadow, which is the opposite of my intention. I could of hanged around more to see if he turned around or repositioned myself although it was very busy with cars and bikes as well as people.
