Intent
Behind the frame
- What I was trying to do:
- The steam caught my eye, especially when headlights from across the intersection illuminated it. I positioned myself low and waited for pedestrians to pass between the headlights and steam, casting their shadows into it.
- What worked:
- The cyclist created my favorite result. The bicycle became partly obscured by the steam, while the shapes of the tires remained distinct. While not intentional at the time, I also like how those circular forms echo the manhole in the foreground.
- What I'd do differently:
- I’d keep looking for a frame with more layering. The cyclist works well on its own, but adding a second subject at a different depth could have made the scene feel even richer while preserving the shadow effect in the steam.
