Intent
Behind the frame
- What I was trying to do:
- I'd been waiting for sunset/blue hour on Ipanema Beach and watched as a group of young lads met up at the beach to surf. They were excited by the conditions (it was pumping), and I wanted to capture the anticipation that a surfer feels, plus the tight friendship that this group clearly had. I'd already taken a few with the sun on their faces, but it wasn't quite working. I circled around and caught their silouette. I've got them evenly placed in the foreground, the leading line of the board, the swimmers in the mid ground and the extra-ordinary cloud cover/mist over the mountains. I had to wait until they were all seperated, but it was worth it.
- What worked:
- I got the light right, and the decision to take it as a siluoette. Plus I've got three clear 'layers' which fill the frame - plus the handy leading line from the surfboard. It's kinda timeless as well . It's quite a 'dreamy' frame - almost unreal. I'd been looking at a lot of Trent Parke's coastal work recently, and tried to capure a bit of his vibe.
- What I'd do differently:
- I blew out the highlights, so had to crop out the sun. I should have gone for 1/500 + F10 (as Matt would have told me to!) and it would have been perfect. F9 just was too much. It would also have been great to get someone actually surfing in the mid ground. But hey ho.
