What I was trying to do
The scene reminded me of the end of Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk”. Kids sent to war, ashamed and anxious about the reception they would receive back home after a failed attempt to re-take France from the Nazis.
What worked
The child being framed in the steam train window and the train conductor walking by at that moment worked to add a bit of tension to the scene.
What I'd do differently
I found it very difficult to compose the reflection using a rangefinder camera. Being able to see through the lens is definitely a benefit when shooting through windows but in the end I hope the horizontal lines are not too distracting.
