What I was trying to do
A pensative kid by the lake, with his bike parked, a Swan and ducks around was a gift of a scene. Given the contrast and composition weight, I expect the viewer's eye to land on the parked bike and travel following the direction both the swan and the duck point towards and finally rest in the pensative kid. I tried to work with a lot of empty space so the components can sit comfortably in the composition, and include a of the lake as well. This kid stayed there for a while, almost as if had lots of problems to think about and bills to pay. This seemingly confused or introspect feeling is what I tried to capture.
What worked
I think the composition is well balanced and induces the viewer's eye to travel trough the composition. The empty space also works very well, I believe, the split between land and water gives a nice structural stability to the composition, I like that as well.
What I'd do differently
First, I removed a couple of ducks from the top of that frame, which I'm usually not very comfortable doing unless it really is something that can convey the feeling I'm trying to produce and is absolutely unavoidable. I wish I have had a moment in which I could have just taken the minimalistic composition without that, but as he approached the lake, many ducks came his way and there was no such moment. But this was one of the few moments in which I made an exception because I love how this turned out. It also, I think, captures a lot of my personal relationship to Sweden and the moments I came to appreciate ever since I moved here.
