Intent
Behind the frame
- What I was trying to do:
- I set out to capture the quiet routines of my daily neighbourhood walk. After two failed attempts framing local architecture and the allotments behind the fence, a sudden change in weather brought me a gift (alas, no pot of gold). While a rainbow over a suburban street is a huge photographic cliché, I wanted to lean into that obviousness. Instead, the real prize was just capturing that sudden contrast: the dark storm clouds clearing, the low golden light hitting the red brick houses, and a lone neighbour out on their commute.
- What worked:
- The tight crop and colour contrast transformed a mobile snapshot into a perhaps more cinematic frame. The wet pavement became a strong leading line, giving the distant figure and rainbow a sense of scale.
- What I'd do differently:
- I would use a dedicated camera with better dynamic range to capture a cleaner image, generally. I would also get much lower to the wet pavement to emphasise the glassy sky reflections, and experiment with timing the walker a bit further down the path. They're a bit lost next to that bin.
