This is about as familiar as it gets for me in this latest stage in my life. Since beginning work in this small market town in the summer of 2017 I have walked up and down this snicket almost daily. it leads to my favourite cafe, and it once led to my workplace. You often have to wait if someone enters to pass through, or they have to wait for you. On a cold, drab, wet day last November I had my camera with me in the unlikely chance I saw something worth photographing. There were very few people around that morning.
What worked:
As I'd been recently dabbling with ICM and slow shutter I think the textures of the stonework, rain, movement of the brolly, and amorphous nature of the figure works. Obv there's more light coming in too on such a dark day. The colours of the brolly worked against the drabness of the day.
What I'd do differently:
I honestly don't think I could given how few people were around that morning, and how grim the weather was. I had a 50mm equivalent on at f8. While the angles are nice and straight (which I like with the 50) maybe shooting at f5.6 or f4 would've yielded a nicer ambiguity in the background, but with the ICM that's probably less of an issue. Maybe even slower shutter at 1/4 perhaps?
