What I was trying to do:
A moody little hostel tucked away in Plaza Séneca, Alicante, just across from my home. Its sign is perched so high up that you could easily walk past it without ever noticing. In fact, I only spotted it yesterday, despite having passed by countless times.
After editing this photograph, I realised that it somehow reminded me of Todd Hido’s work, but with our own little Plaza Séneca atmosphere here in Alicante. There’s plenty of negative space, the stillness of the night, a sense of loneliness, and traces of human presence, symbolised by the sources of light.
I must admit that finding this kind of atmosphere around where I live has been quite a challenge. Our immediate surroundings don't exactly lend themselves to cinematic imagery, and it's not always easy to find something visually compelling in such ordinary places. But I'm rather pleased with the simplicity of this one.
