Behind the frame
What I was trying to do:
I found this spot while wandering around Sydney for this month's assignment. In a watch shop window, a screen played a loop featuring moving figures. From a side angle, there was a moment where the man on the screen appeared to be looking out the window. I set out to line that up with someone walking past, waiting until a pedestrian looked at the display so it seemed like they were making eye contact. The shop’s curved glass and afternoon light also provided interesting distorted reflections and a mix of textures from old and new architecture and signage, which felt right on brief.
What worked:
It took about 30 minutes and numerous frames, but patience paid off when this couple walked past, noticed the looping video, and stepped up to look at the watches in the window, creating the exact connection I was waiting for.
What I'd do differently:
Because I was on my lunch break, my time was tight. Given more time, I would have liked to explore different compositions and perhaps wait for an additional figure in the frame to add more visual layers to the scene.
