I wanted the body to read as part of the landscape rather than placed in it. The Joshua tree’s limb has the same tension as a stretched leg, so I asked her to climb rather than pose — to reach for something instead of holding still for me. Late, flat desert light let me flatten the sky to almost nothing and keep everything in the tree’s texture: bark, fibers, muscle. The feeling I was chasing was effort with joy in it — not a nude, but someone mid-motion who happens to be uncovered.
