Intent
Behind the frame
- What I was trying to do:
- I wanted to try to capture the spirit of a hot summer night driving with the windows down and a good song on the radio. Every August over a million people make their way to the city of Detroit to celebrate the city’s automotive history and car culture, and the streets are packed with every type of car you could imagine. My favorite are the classic American cars with their sleek, space age designs and soft metallic pastel paint jobs. I wanted to photograph such a car in a way that felt like time travel to the days when a night drive with the family might have been the entertainment for the evening, before iPhones and streaming everything, when we engaged with each other.
- What worked:
- The expression on the boy's face, the sense of motion in the car. Also it was my first day shooting with a new camera, the Leica Q3 Monochrome, so this is a true black and white image.
- What I'd do differently:
- Ideally every car around it would be a classic car, but that will never be possible. This was one of my last shots of the night, I don't think I would have done anything differently. I was thrilled to get this.
