Behind the frame
What I was trying to do:
I was trying to photograph an argument between a driver and a traffic cop. As I was about to click, into the frame, walks a street sweeper. As if that were not enough, from the right side of the frame, a large belly draped in lime green pops in.
Clearly, I was no longer directing this photograph. At that point I stopped asking questions and pressed the shutter.
What worked:
The layers. The lime-green shirt almost assaults the foreground, the sweeper cuts through the middle, and the argument carries on behind them. The colours and gestures keep pulling the eye around the frame. I also like that the photograph takes a moment to decipher. At first it looks like a slightly deranged colour study. Then you realise there is an argument going on.
What I'd do differently:
I might have framed a fraction wider to give the foreground figure a little more breathing room, but his intrusion is ultimately what makes the photograph. Had I waited for a cleaner composition, the moment would be gone. Sometimes the street composes something far better than you planned, and overthinking a shot only drains the humor out of it.
