Behind the frame
- What I was trying to do:
- A concrete jetty in Salvador at the end of the day. What drew me was that nobody there was doing the same thing — one on his phone, one drinking, a woman with braids sitting, kids messing around in the water, others fishing. I wanted the whole depth of it in one frame, from the two boys right in front of me out to the cargo ships on the horizon, without the sunset taking over.
- What worked:
- Standing behind the two boys instead of walking around them. They cut into the frame and give it a near edge, which is what keeps the sunset from becoming the subject. I also like that the bucket of wall filler is sitting there in the middle of it, filled with fishing bait.
- What I'd do differently:
- Get lower. From standing height the jetty reads flatter than it felt, and four of the six people on it end up backlit and hard to read. I'd also have framed it better, not cutting the two on the foreground from the frame.
