NAS or DAS?
Hi! I don't know if I'm writing to the right section but I wanted to ask people about their NAS or DAS system experience and recommendations. I saw Josh's NAS video and shooting always I thought that I should update my system a bit (recently I lost data from Lacie and that made me question everything again. I had one backup) I heard that NAS system are targets of hackers these days and DAS is safer and less expensive etc. and also NAS or DAS HDD's are less expensive than portable ones. so It kinda makes more sense?
I set up a Synology NAS three years ago and it’s been running flawlessly and completely hassle free, so would definitely recommend.

Following that NAS video I can confirm that the NAS has probably been the best piece of photo kit I have picked up in years.

it's been fantastic for me genuinely, like @heroesforsale said, I dont bother with the remote access as I dont need it, I essentially just use it as a HUGE place to store and organise photos, the big benefit of the ugreen system is their AI powered search tool for going through my archive, works so well. I am also glad I spent a bit more money and added in some SSD storage, really good for my video editing suff, but depends on if thats any use to you or not.

Echoing what Anton and Josh have said. I got a Synology NAS last year and it’s solved all of my problems in dealing with storage. I don’t even think about storage now.
I’ve also turned off remote access to the NAS so I don’t have any security issues.

I would still partner any NAS or DAS solution with offsite backups.

In terms of pricing, I would say it's all the same nowadays (especially if you're looking for good brands such as Synology or QNAP). Unfortunately hard drives are quite expensive at the moment, but depending on the amount of storage you're looking for and if you want RAID or not, you can save some money.
As someone who stores and edits loads of 4K footage, I do prefer DAS as most NAS will connect through ethernet/wifi, but if you're storing photos and other documents, NAS will do just fine and you can easily access the files remotely.
Has anyone looked to build their own solution vs something off the shelf like Synology?
If you need instant access that you can connect through Wi-Fi or you need to share with others instantly, the NAS is a better option.
For me I'd rather get DAS since I don't have space to plug it near my internet router and you don't have to keep it connected all the time, unlike NAS, but that's if I ever decide to go that route. For the time being, my portable HDDs have been sufficient for the last couple of years.
+1 for NAS, I've been rocking my Synology for almost 10 years and it's a great way of not having to worry about it. Just needs to adjust your workflow a bit but can't stress how much peace of mind and simplicity you gain.
I bought a Synology NAS a few years ago (3-ish) and it works flawlessly. You can disable remote access to the machine.
If you're more tech-savvy, you can set up Tailscale software to access it from anywhere without the drawbacks of "remote access" provided by Synology OS.
I bought a synology NAS, 2 disk setup and setup RAID 1 e.g. mirror the disk, both disk have the same content. 1 fails and you just buy another one of the same type and plug it in and it rebuilds the raid to you have redundancy again. 2 x 4TB disks you get around 4TB of space. It was simple to setup and just works, I have had a disk fail and replace it with no issues. I have been in IT for 30 years and use to build pc's as a kid, plus build large scale SAN's for high street brands and wouldn't build a NAS myself as I want the reliability of a system that's supported by a known provider software and hardware. I also have another backup of a NVRAM disk in a cadie as extra protection, plus it's really fast to copy data. If you buy a NAS and your connecting to Wifi transfer will be slow when copying lots of files, so consider if it has a USB port on it you can attach faster storage to copy your files over on mass.
