Self-storage solution: Immich
I've decided to finally migrate all of photos (both from cameras and mobile) to a self-storage solution called Immich. The goal is to replace Google Photos/Apple iCloud, have my photos ready to be seen or downloaded from anywhere and also to automatically backup my phone photos instead of using iCloud. It was a bit of a back and forth with Claude (I know...) to make it work, but I have to say that so far it is working really good. Really recommend this for people who are trying to get away from cloud storage solutions. https://immich.app Is there any other self-storage solution that you use?
I've heard of it, looks super nice. Do you host this somewhere on the cloud of with a NAS?
I've used my NAS for storage (+ backup to Backblaze B2 with a sync overnight that checks for deltas in the buckets vs my NAS folders) but for viewing photos I was just using the Synology Photos app. Although it's quite slow (maybe because of my NAS being quite old) and I still pay for iCloud as I use that for mobile phones + shared with family.
All is hosted on my Mac Studio. Just had to set up Tailscale so I can access it remotely (both for browsing files or virtual machine when I need to do remote editing).
It’s been really good in terms of speed, and my Mac is connected via Wi-Fi, not Ethernet.
Nice one, having a Mac Studio for running this + DAS is a great setup. I'm going to see if when I upgrade the NAS to a newer model with more RAM and better CPU I can give it a try.
I think it's definitely worth a shot. I thought about NAS in the past but DAS works better for me, especially for video editing. Which NAS are you going for? Still staying with Synology?

Yeah for Video DAS makes more sense. Especially with Thunderbolt vs Ethernet. You can also combine DAS with a NAS for permanent storage or have something to sync to the Cloud.
I’ll probably stick with Synology for ease of upgrading and since it’s been around for years. Was worried about their disk fiasco but they backtracked so it’s fine. Ugreen ones look quite good tho, and great price.
Immich is great! I have it deployed in a DigitalOcean droplet. I originally deployed it to help my mom back up her photos (Apple doesn't let me add her as family in my plan), which has been great- pretty much set it and forget it.
