What’s your EDC lately?
I’ve been going back to my M10 + 50mm a lot lately because it feels nice and reliable- and fun? The shutter sound, image quality, and size… all very pleasing. It’s not the most practical camera for everything but for now I’ll take the enjoyment factor over everything else tbh. What are using lately?
Why do you find it less practical than others? (I am not familiar with the camera)
I use my XT5 + 23mm, but reaaaally looking forward to have a smaller camera like the XE5 (even if I don't like the lack of ISO control)
One of the reasons I don't use it commercially is because you can't tether it - so no client review. That can be a problem.
No autofocus. Auto exposure can be... unreliable. Max shutter is 1/4000 so if you do want to shoot that summilux wide open in daylight you need an ND.
All little stuff really - I still love it to death.
Josh has been raving about the XE5 - seems like a lot of camera for such a small package.
Oh, I see! Is there a specific reason as to why Leica M10 are without so many things (AF, no tethering, the SS…) despite such a high price? (Genuinely asking)
It's a Leica.
The digital M Leicas occupy a particular niche, echoing their film predecessors.
The GOAT setup 👆
How much have you played with the M11? I'm starting to think many of the small improvements (battery life, highlight retention, quieter shutter, USB-C charging, electronic shutter option etc) may mount up to be worth it in the future but I'm curious why so many people who have used both genuinely seem to prefer the M10.
Buggy original firmware I wonder or something else?
Funnily enough, I tried the M11 this year and ended up selling it after a few months. The shutter just feels wrong compared to the M10, and I don't want 60mp files. Have you tried one at all? I think you'd feel the same way about the shutter. It feels delayed because of how they changed the mechanics of how the camera exposes.
I have tried one in the shop and walked around Wetzlar for a few hours with one. I actually liked the quieter shutter sound and using it in live-view seems smoother somehow (probably down to the different/less mechanical nature of the shutter). It is interesting to me that many people see it as a step back though and a bit worrying if some of this is down to reliability.
I really just want to chuck a few USB-C cables and bricks into my bag when traveling and know I'm all set for charging everything, it's just unfortunate that with Leica this privilege costs £££!
This thread is why I just can't ever see myself buying a Leica no matter how much the brand calls to me. If I ever spend over £3k on a camera, my expectations would mean it would have to be perfect in every way, otherwise I'll be so disappointed

In that case, get an M3 and forget about digital! Most are still going strong and completely serviceable after 70 years.
In all honesty though, when the M10 came out I remember thinking it was finally the perfect digital rangefinder and couldn't be improved upon. It is only recently that I've been eyeing up some of the M11 benefits but I can't see myself upgrading anytime soon.
I'd love to keep a digital camera all my life like people used to with film cameras but the reality is they're always being improved upon and there's always something shinny to look at next. I do really believe though that Leica M's probably have much less upgrade-G.A.S than other brands. When you forget about autofocus, EVF, continuous shots per second and video for example, every other upgrade just feels optional. People still make great photos with with M9 and M6's are more popular than ever.
And the lenses? With the oldest mount in existence, I am confident I will still be using my lovely M lenses when I'm old and decrepit. It's a lot of money up-front but hopefully balances out in the long run compared to the Sony A7, A7III, A7R V etc I could have bought.

You touched on a lot of the reasons why I like the M10. I had an M8 and kept and eye on the M240's and M262's – when the 10 came out if felt like they had got the balance on things right - a least in Leica terms. It's one of the first camera's where I've felt I'm not dying to upgrade anytime soon.
This was one of the reasons I returned my M11; it just didn’t feel “right” for me haha. It’s a great camera, though :)
I have limited time to shoot so these days I generally stick with my Canon R5's. I am working a project now that requires that I shoot a variety of prime lenses. The light/street set up is normally a Canon R5 with either the 28mm or 35mm primes. The 28mm pancake is fairly stealthy.
Documentary work is mostly with the RF 24-70 f/2.8. I have been enjoying shooting the protests with the RF 70-200 f/2.8 quite a bit.
I’m about 2-3 weeks into a stint with the GR4 Monochrome. Had a realization that 1. I was spending too much time in Lightroom instead of out taking pictures and 2. When I was out taking pictures, I wasn’t shooting enough. Been really fun so far, like I’m barely even using a camera, just seeing/clicking. Hoping to learn more about my instincts by shooting this way.
That is by far the most tempting GR camera imo. I loved shooting B&W with my GR2 back in the day. So it lives up to the hype?
it does (for me so far at least)! I completely understand why folks don’t love these cameras but the high iso performance means you can set it to 1/1000 f11 with Auto ISO and get something usable and in focus every single time. Have been pretty liberal using the 35/50 cropping too and just not getting worried about the megapixels as long as the shot works. Really liberating photography experience overall, but very much not tactile/immersive/considered like the experience I’m used to (rangefinders primarily)
That's very interesting. I would love to try a monochrome camera at some point.
That 28mm summilux... There are very few lenses that make me go 'wow' when i see pictures from it. That's one of them.
My Canon P has convinced me I need a Leica digital rangefinder. I just really enjoy the rangefinder experience. I think I'll be saving that little extra for an M10 now.
My current digital camera is an om-3. I love everything about that camera apart from the tiny viewfinder.
Funnily enough that's the route i took to an M10. I started with a Canon P, then Konica Hexar RF, then M10 - the viewfinder was the key thing about the M10. It's glorious.
Haha, like you needed much to persuade you, you needed a Leica rangefinder
I can't get up the gear obsessed leaderboard without it Michael....
EDC has been simplified more and more over the last few years.
Typically looks something like:
Sunglasses.
Shoes.
Ricoh GrIIIx.
And a cool buzz 🤙🏻
Can stay out all day that way 😉
I try to make sure I have my GRiv in my pocket if I’m leaving the house for any substantial amount of time. Before that it would be a point and shoot film camera like an Olympus XA2 or a Lomo LCA.
I bought the kit lens for my Sony A7c ii for a good price secondhand as I wanted a pancake lens for that camera that would make it more likely that I’d take it out as an EDC camera. It fits in a cross body bag I have that way, but I still only take that out when I want to do some “proper” photography.
The GrIIIx has made me a photographer again. I’m a little neurotic with it, so it lives in a Lowepro pouch (like those popular in the early days of digicams) that is carabinered to my belt loop or my hydro flask.
I take more photos now than I have in many years. Simply because I have to to take the odd 1 or 2 frames when out and about. Over the course of a year, those add up.
I know what you mean about the pouch, I did the same but have finally graduated to having one in a coat pocket but with a lens cap or handheld and no cap.
X-e5 with the 35mm 1.4. Killer combo in a relatively small package.
28mm Q3
With the occasional DJI attachment for capturing BTS of the scenes
Simple but always effective
Nice. Me and Josh have been using 360 cameras for bts lately.
Good call, Next purchase for video is the Pocket 4P - 17 stops of dynamic range is insaneeeeee
Pocket friendly
Met Robin Ince tonight as he was sharing stories and reading some poetry. Luckily this little EDC was ready in my pocket. Shame I’m terrible at portrait photography! 😂
Most days, I shoot digital with my Sony A7C and FE 24mm f/2.8. But on special occasions, I tend to reach for my Leica M2 with a Mandler 35mm f/2 and Portra 400.
I just picked up a used A7CR and the Zeiss 55mm 1.8. That lens being almost 15 years old is wild because it’s still INCREDIBLE. The shutter sound on that camera is super weird but doesn’t cause too much attention, so I’m fine with it. Going to give this combo a run for the next few months to see how I land with it. So far, I’ve been enjoying it.
I thought that Ziess 55mm would be a forever favourite - just the perfect size to weight and image quality ratio, just a shame it's locked to Sony E mount. It's probably tied with the Summilux as my all-time favourite now. I still can't bear to part with it despite almost never using my Sony A7 these days.
Olympus OM-2n with 50mm f/1.8 or Mju-1 are always with me (when I don't feel like one of the larger ones)
I've been using a loaner Q3 (OG 28mm, none of this 43mm nonsense ;-)). I really love the form factor, ease of use, zone focus, image quality (but is it too sharp?). I don't like the almost silent shutter - no idea if I've taken a photo in noisy situations, the battery life can be mysterious, I don't need 60MP and is it any better than my ZF with a 28mm Jon Voigt lens? Don't think so - but it's nice.
Have owned the 28 and 43 and feel the same way. Love the image quality, but didn't feel it was worth the exponential jump in price each time. Yet, something still draws me to the Q series. Every time I see one posted on Marketplace I'm tempted!
Loaner schmoner.
My Minolta X-500 has replaced my little 35mm Konika rangefinder
What’s the difference between that one and the X700 Lloydy? Looks very similar
I haven't got a clue :)
Was the one I saw on eBay
Find out man! 😀

Ha.
Research done:
500 has a better viewfinder with suggested and actual shutter speed displayed in the viewfinder. 700 has a fully auto mode, viewfinder not as good as 500.

Ah I like the sound of the viewfinder. Great service thanks Lloydy

Very similar, M10-P with a 35mm Zeiss f/2 and a 50mm Voigtlander f/1.2. Everything you've mentioned in regards to the M10 I completely agree with - including the practicality point.
Wouldn't mind trying out an SL2 or SL3 for a week to compare the two.
Mine is Sony A7rII + Jupiter 50mm. Working with a manual focus really requires you to look for precision and intent.
I have an X-Pro2 now that I use and when combined with a pancake lens it is very easy to haul around all day. Not pocketable in your regular jeans but fits very well in any coat pocket
I use my Fuji XE 5 with the Voigtlaender 19mm, alongside with the Ricoh GRIV.
The Ricoh mostly on bike rides, the Fuji as an EDC.
BUT lately I thought about to exchange both, for a Leica Q2.
Maybe somebody here has a opinion on this change?
Idk about that trade. Just get the fuji 18 1.4 if you want an image quality upgrade
it´s not just the quality upgrade, sometimes I need to use another system that forces me to work different.
but I don´t know if the Q2 has an autofocus which works for my everyday work, or if it´s fun to focus manually.
It's not as fun to manually focus as an M camera. It's great for zone focusing though. The autofocus is average at best.
Replying to Craig Nelson
thanks for the insides.
I think I need to try one
Replying to karlo.kolumna.eins
Definitely try one. The Q's aren't very 'snappy' and a slow camera, but image quality is decent. I come from Fuji and Nikon.
Replying to Craig Nelson
Personally I wouldn't swap 2x cameras (that are excellent) for a Q2.
Replying to Craig Nelson
Agreed. I currently own the xe5 with 3 lenses and definitely wouldn't give it up for a q2. I owned both the q3 and q3 43 for a solid period of time and sold both. Q3 maybe you could make the argument as it has the QOL upgrades. Q series won't make you work any differently. It's just a fixed lens autofocus camera. M series would be a bigger change
M10 + 50 for me now, too. I might switch it to a 35 or 28 if I feel like it.
Just think of an M10s worth in the future if the rumoured sale to China goes ahead. Is this the beginning of the end?
From what I've heard, it's a minority sale from one private equity company to another so hopefully nothing to worry about.
A7C II and Voigtlander 40mm f2 Septon. Sometimes my TTArtisan 100mm f2.8.
What a dream lens that would be to have for my A7C ii. Some day…
Well worth it imo. A tiny manual FF lens with bags of character. Ideal for street photography.
Mine is a Sony A7iv with a 40mm 2.5G (well, as of Tuesday when MPB delivered the lens!)
Mostly I'm using a Panasonic LUMIX GX80 or a Canon G1x. Sometimes a old Canon 5d Mark II. Love the Images they produce. Cameras from that time have so much character. In my opinion so much better than the clinical Images from new cameras. Old but gold😉
I picked up the Fujifilm X-E5 in Japan. Swapped between it and my Sony A6600 my last night in Japan and a for couple of days in Hong Kong. Pleased at its low light performance compared to the Sony, and that the photos appear to be easier to edit in Lightroom CC. Now that I’m back home and have picked a couple of spare batteries it’ll become my EDC. Still have to get used to the 23mm lens until I can get a zoom for. My first camera that is not a Sony in a long time.
Have the same set and love it! Enjoy
If you're asking what our everyday camera is, it's been some version of the X100 for several years now, and since its release, that's been the X100VI.
I've experimented with both the Ricoh GR IIIx and the Leica Q2 as potential replacements, but neither really clicked with me, so both ended up being sold. This might be a bit of a polarising take, but I use both the WCL and TCL converters, and the WCL pretty much lives on the camera permanently. One thing the Q2 taught me is just how much I love shooting at 28mm.
I know an X-T5 or another interchangeable-lens body could have been an option, but for me, the extra investment wasn't something I could justify. As it stands, I'm really happy with the setup I have, it suits the way I shoot 😊
You should look at the work from Valerie Jardin (www.valeriejardinphotography.com). Apparently she’s only ever uses X100 cameras and shoots jpg’s without any editing.
Thank you so much, i will take a look 😊
Loved the WCL when I had my x100!
