Magnum photographers don't nail every assignment
RE: Europe’s Living Rooms https://www.magnumphotos.com/arts-culture/europes-living-room/ I constantly have this sense of inadequacy, that a better photographer could go into any situation and make amazing work. Whenever I do a newspaper or magazine assignment, I’m disappointed that I don’t like the photos as much as I do for my personal work (for my own work, if I don’t like something I just move on, it doesn’t get published). Anyway, I love it when brands ask a bunch of Magnum photographers to do a project. I always get to see photographers I revere share work that isn’t that strong, like this one for Heineken. What is/ isn't strong though? Who decides? Does it matter? I find the online world of photography quite honestly head battering at times. Then I go on a whole cycle of, why am I doing this, who cares? etc... but I keep pressing the shutter button so I guess I must like it.
"What is/ isn't strong though?" A very good question as by definition, it's a subjective field, not a science with right and wrong answers. Keep pressing the shutter and believe in what you do. If you get appreciated fantastic, if not it doesn't really matter. I think the act of trying to create something is the most important thing.
