Behind the frame
What I was trying to do:
Pull one out of the fire. This was taken on September 29th. I'd been sitting on a black and white photo for a while (and had actually submitted it) but was heading into London one final time before the deadline and I was basically on the hunt for interesting moments.
What worked:
A bunch of things came together here. I have no idea who these people were but the guy in the Madrid shirt was taking on any challengers at a very small game of football within the confines of that circle. He didn't know the person he was playing against but he'd just scored a goal and the fact he's framed by the reaction of his opponent's friends (you can just about see his opponent's feet by the goal) made me smile.
I was using a 35mm manual focus lens so I just set it to the hyperfocal distance at f/8 stood on the side of the game where the light was coming from. It was cloudy enough that nobody was casting a shadow but there was just enough light to make the subject's face pop when he turned to face his friend who is out of frame to the right.
What I'd do differently:
I've cropped in quite heavily here. Originally it was a 3x2 with a satisfyingly clear background but the lads playing the game are the stars so focus on them is important.
Maybe shot in portrait to begin with, but who knows?
