Intent
Behind the frame
- What I was trying to do:
- I saw the shiny, black top of the piano, the reflections of ceiling lights, and the man's head at the edge of the piano and things just all fell into place for me.
- What worked:
- The solid black with the white lines lead the eye off the piano to the man's head. The reflection of the wall creates some visual ambiguity and tricks the eye. Months after taking the picture, I read something that recalled to me Arnold Newman's portrait of "Stravinsky at the Piano" and I wonder if I had somehow been subconsciously motivated by that.
