Hi everyone, this is a shot from a recent day out with the camera 📷, im finding so much time to spend with the camera at the moment, feedback or criticism is always welcome
Hi @momentsmasterpieces what were you trying to achieve when you took this photo? Always interested to hear about people's thought process
Hi M&M,
Your intent is clear here, I think: to highlight the plight of the homeless sleeping under an advertisement for cheap travel and holidays. I like the graffiti on he walls which suggests we're not in Piccadilly or some posh market town. The exposure and focus look fine so, on paper, it's a great shot. But, somehow, it just misses the mark. For me at least, sorry!
I think the problem is that the homeless person sleeping is a bit lost in the shadows - and isn't clearly defined enough. Had I not looked closely to provide this feedback, I think I might have moved on without spotting the soles of the shoes which tells us there's a person in the shot. (Others might think that is its strength?) I realise too that the woman in blue in the ad' appears to be looking down at the rough sleeper and smiling at what she sees, which further conveys moral decay in society.
Might there be an opportunity to revisit the scene and have another go in different light conditions which are more favourable to the rough sleeper?
I personally think the ‘homeless person juxtaposed with their surroundings’ thing has been done to death and is rarely interesting enough to negate the moral issues of such photos. Looking at the other photos you’ve submitted you’ve got a great eye for interesting composition, but I don’t feel this one matches the same quality found in your other submissions.
I always appreciate the feedback and will always take it on board as I believe I'll only get better from it, I was just out and about doing a day of photography trying different things, I agree that the lighting wasn't the best for this shot looking back at it and I also agree that it's a sensitive subject when taking photos of the homeless, for me this scene caught my attention as we as a family spent a lot of time homeless when I was a child and now im fortune enough to be in a very different position
