This is a scary endeavor for me; does anyone have any tips on how to get started? My recent trip to NYC and the photos I captured will likely be the source I’ll be pulling from.
I also want to do a zine for my recent work. I think you should do a First draft of the Photos you wanna have and then start to do a first Layout and see what works and what not.
It sounds simple, but it can be quite challenging – definitely worth it though. I’m currently waiting for my zine to come back from the printers. For me, the trickiest part was selecting images that were strong individually, worked together as a set, and weren’t too repetitive. I had lots of similar images that I liked, but I tried to avoid repeating the same gestures, having too many portraits, or showing the same type of scene over and over. I got a batch of inexpensive prints made and spent time moving them around on my dining table, experimenting with different selections and sequences. I’m not sure how much it helped, but it certainly made me think more carefully about the flow of the zine. Personally, I think less is often more in a zine, although I’ve probably included a few too many images myself! I’d also recommend asking someone independent to look through your zine before placing the final print order. And definitely get a draft copy printed first so you can check that the photos reproduce well and that any text, captions, or spelling are correct.
